Optical

The IDG has considerable expertise in optomechanical engineering. We develop optomechanical systems for visible, IR, UV, and neutron optics.

Design and analysis capabilites:

  • Athermal lens cells
  • Lens coupling
  • Flexures
  • Multi-point mirror mounts
  • Optical benches
  • Baffle design
  • Kinematic mounts
  • Optomechanical tolerancing

Picture of SDSS Flexure Membrane flexure for the SDSS spectrograph collimating mirror
The f/4 collimator in the SDSS multi-object spectrograph is supported by a membrane flexure. IDG designed and tested this flexure as part of the spectrograph development effort. [more]

Picture of SDSS Camera SDSS spectrograph blue channel camera
This camera was designed and built by the IDG for the SDSS spectrographs. The camera lens assembly consists of three athermal cells: a singlet, a triplet, and a doublet. The multiplets are coupled via optical grease. [more]

Picture of FUSE collimators FUSE collimator assembly
The IDG designed and built the optical end-to-end test system for the FUSE program. The system consists of four coaligned cassegrain collimators integrated in a single optical bench. It was used to verify the optical performance of FUSE in thermal-vac prior to launch. [more]
