The IDG offers mechanical component and system design services for a wide range of devices:  from one-of-a-kind instruments to a production-run of assemblies. Our mechanical capabilities include:

  • Mechanical design with solid modeling and 3D rendering using Pro/ENGINEER
  • Detailed assembly and fabrication drawings using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Conceptual ideas & cost estimates for proposals plus detailed designs and part specifications for the final product
  • FEA, stress and thermal analysis
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Integration and testing for product requirement verification
  • Complete documentation of all parts, assemblies & procedures

IDG has in-house access to the following equipment/software:

  • Pro/ENGINEER 2001 & Wildfire
  • AutoCAD 2002
  • ABAQUS
  • Mathcad
  • Various Machine Tools (milling machine, lathe, drill press)
  • Plenty of lab space to accommodate assembly and testing needs
  • Class 10000 Clean Room
  • Inspection/Measurement Devices (micrometers, calipers, theodolites)

The IDG provided mechanical design as well as the overall system design, electrical design, control software development, and testing and integration. [more]

Picture of NIST-BT7 NIST MACS-Doubly Focusing (Neutron) Monochromator
The MACS-DFM is a very large crystal array, low background, doubly focusing device, which serves as the focal and monochromating element for the NIST MACS Spectrometer. IDG provided mechanical engineering, design, and systems engineering. [more]

Picture of Optical Spectrographs  Optical Spectrographs for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
JHU built two multiple object, fiber-fed spectrographs for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).  The IDG provided mechanical and systems engineering, as well as the mechanical design, for this project. [more]
