The IDG draws upon a wide range of skills and experience in computational analysis

Mechanical
  • Finite Element Analysis [ABAQUS] Standard and Explicit FEA solver
  • PTC Pro-Mechanica, Altair Engineering’s HyperWorks
  • linear and non-linear FEA (including both geometric and material non-linearities)
  • Stress analysis
  • Strength and stiffness determination
  • Dynamic analysis including normal mode extraction, shock, frequency response, and random vibration
  • Heat transfer
  • Coupled thermal / mechanical modeling

Optical
  • Determination of component and system level optical performance
  • Mechanical and Fabrication tolerancing.
  • Quantification of performance impact due to temperature dependencies

  • Combined Finite Element and Ray Tracing efforts to quantify optical performance as a function of complex mechanical and thermal environments.

Collimator Primary FEA Primary Mirror FEA for the FUSE collimator
Finite element analysis of the primary mirror for the FUSE collimator. The fringe plot shows the distortion that results if the in-plane support is located at the back surface of the mirror. [more]

Flexure von-Mises Stress Mirror Mount Flexure von-Mises Stress
Finite element analysis of the von-Mises stress in a mirror mount flexure. The mount was used for the secondary mirror in the FUSE collimators. The flexure facilitates tip and tilt adjustment of the mirror. [more]
